Umberto Allemandi
Umberto Allemandi (9 March 1938 – 9 March 2026) was an Italian publisher.[1] In 1983, he founded the art newspaper, Il Giornale dell’Arte. He was the editor of the paper for 42 years.[2][3]
Life and career
Allemandi was born in Turin on 9 March 1938.[2]
He started as a copywriter with the sudio Armando Head. Apart from starting the art newspaper in 1983, the English edition title The Art Newspaper, was started in London in 1990 which was co-founded with Anna Somers Cocks. He directed the English edition until 2002.[3] Later, he created another monthly publication Il Giornale dell’Architettura, and published it between 2002 and 2014. It was to provide information in the fields of architecture, construction, design, urban planning, and the environment. Another publishing house on art that he started, Umberto Allemandi & C, was later acquired by Compagnia di San Paolo.[2][4] He published many books on art.[5][6]
Allemandi died on 9 March 2026, his 88th birthday.[7]
Award
In 1992, Allemandi received the publisher award, the "National Award for Culture" from the then Prime Minister of Italy Carlo Azeglio Ciampi for 'publishing'.[8]
