Fear & Hunger 2: Termina is a roleplaying survival horror video game developed by Finnish developer Miro Haverinen and released on December 9, 2022 on Windows and macOS. The game is a sequel to Fear & Hunger, taking place in the same universe in 1942, following 14 strangers forced by the moon-god Rher to partake in a battle royale in the fictional city Prehevil.
The sequel received critical acclaim, and was praised for introducing new elements to the established lore and gameplay, while retaining the strengths of the original.
History
Setting
Fear & Hunger 2 is set in the same universe as its predecessor, but takes place in 1942 in a post-WW2 setting, approximately 300 years after the events of the first game.[1][2]
The game is set in the fictional city of Prehevil, inspired by Prague, where 14 strangers are forced to participate for three days in the nominal Festival of Termina.[1][3] The Festival is organized by the trickster moon-god Rher and consists of a battle royale.[1][4]
Using his power "Moonscorching", Rher deformed most citizens of Prehevil, altering their minds and appearances and forcing them to kill. Were the participants of the Festival reluctant to partake, they would follow a similar fate.[4]
Characters
8 of the 14 participants are currently available to play.[1][3]
Marcoh is a 30-year-old strong boxer, Levi a 18-year-old former child soldier skilled with long-raged weapons, and Abella a 27-year-old mechanic able to improvise tools.
Gameplay
Choices
The game features multiple endings based on the player's choices during their playthrough.
Combat
Just like in the first game, combat is turn-based where the player can dismember enemies, and vice-versa. However, due to the setting's time period, the player can now use firearms inside and outside of combat.[1]
All playable characters differ from one another due to their unique skills at the beginning of the game.[1]
Exploration
A passing-time mechanic exists in the sequel, and sleeping in a bed enables the player to save and makes the time of day move forward. A day-night cycle consists of the morning, the evening, and the night, each of these influencing enemies, quests, and characters.
A novelty of the game is the ability to draw sigils to appeal to the powers of the gods.
Another novelty is the existence of a safe zone, the Prehevil Bop, similar to those in Resident Evil allowing the player to rest amid the horrors.[5]
Development
Like the first game, Fear & Hunger 2: Termina is based on RPG Maker MV. The game was released on December 9, 2022, although it is still in development.[3]
Reception
Marcus Jones argues that the game is a "JRPG Horror Perfection", and acclaims a wide selection of characters, and novelties gameplay and history wise.[1]
Destructoid applauds the game for having kept the great elements of the first video game while adding an original setting and a large selection of characters.[2]
Patrick Armstrong praises Miro Haverinen for having exploited the potential of RPG Maker MV while preserving the great elements of its prequel. While remaining "devilishly hard", he stresses that the sequel is easier than the prequel. In his eyes it is one of the best sequels in video game history.[6]
Zubi Kan explains that the knowledge-based gameplay which is truly unique and subversive makes this game truly fantastic.[7]
SUPERJUMP columnist Maris Crane salutes this video game and particularly its immersion thanks to its horrific, stressful and threatening music and universe, contrasted by the safe zone of the game allowing the player to rest.[5][8]
