Brandon McCoy Jr. (born November 13, 2007)[1] is an American basketball player at Sierra Canyon School in Los Angeles, California. He is a five-star prospect and one of the top recruits in the class of 2026.
Early life
McCoy grew up in Oakland, California, before moving to Los Angeles as a freshman in high school.[2] He attended St. John Bosco High School and played basketball there as a guard.[3] He averaged 8.6 point and 4.5 rebounds per game as a freshman while serving as the team's sixth man, helping them to an appearance in the CIF-SS Open Division championship.[4] As a sophomore in 2023–24, he averaged 18.6 points, 8.0 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.4 steals per game, being honored as the MaxPreps National Sophomore of the Year.[5] McCoy was also selected as the Press-Telegram Player of the Year.[6] McCoy missed a portion of the 2024–25 season due to injury, but was still named honorable mention All-American by MaxPreps and averaged 16.5 points and 5.9 rebounds per game.[7][8] In August 2025, he transferred to Sierra Canyon School for his senior season.[4] In his debut with Sierra Canyon, McCoy scored 25 points, including nine slam dunks in the Trailblazers' 60–45 win over the JSerra Lions in the Trinity-Mission League Challenge at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion on November 22, 2025.[9]
A consensus five-star recruit, McCoy is one of the top recruits in the class of 2026.[10] He is ranked by On3.com as the second-best player in the nation and is also ranked in the top-10 of his class by 247Sports and ESPN.[10][11][12]
International career
In 2023, McCoy was a member of the United States national under-16 basketball team and won a gold medal at the 2023 FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship.[13] He then played for the U.S. national under-17 team at the 2024 FIBA Under-17 Basketball World Cup, winning the gold medal while averaging 10.0 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.3 assists.[14] He was named the best defensive player at the Under-17 World Cup.[15] In 2025, he played for the national under-19 team at the 2025 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup and helped the U.S. to the gold medal.[3][10]
